A courtyard expansion transformed the home with a larger kitchen, new living spaces, & modern updates.

“About six years ago, we were looking to either buy a larger home or expand our home. We went to an open house of a home that had been renovated by Soderholm Custom Builders and just loved the quality of work and craftsmanship.

We contacted Ken and Sam almost immediately to discuss renovating our home, despite just having a newborn baby. We knew right away that we wanted to work with Soderholm Custom Builders because Ken and Sam had so much knowledge about every aspect of home renovation. They immediately had ideas for how to gain more space and address some existing issues we had with the home. We had not previously done a project of this scale, so they were patient with us in explaining the process and timelines, budgeting, permitting, and the various subcontractors we would need. It was overwhelming at the time, especially with our newborn baby, so we waited a few months and then got back in touch with the Soderholms to start work.

The project centered around expanding our kitchen into a courtyard space in our backyard. We ended up gaining a larger kitchen, new bedroom, and new basement space by building out and up (building on a new foundation). We also updated wood floors, put in a new roof, and updated heating and cooling systems.

Soderholm Custom Builders started with us at the beginning of our project, helping us with permitting, working with an architect, and selecting all ubcontractors.

You often hear that a home renovation project can be stressful, with delays and overrun budgets. When we look back at our home renovation, it was about as worry-free as you can get with a project of this scale. We felt complete trust that Sam and Rob (our project manager) were on top of every aspect of our project. They were very clear with the timeline and decisions that we needed to make to keep things moving forward.

One of the biggest challenges that we faced was the COVID lockdown, which came near the end of our project. Even though no one knew what to do or what to expect, Sam, Rob, and Ken managed to organize the subcontractors to come in separately so we could finish our project and move back in with minimal delay.

Our experience with Soderholm Custom Builders exceeded expectations. We loved working with Sam, Rob, and Ken, as well as all the subcontractors. Our home is everything we asked for and more, and you can tell there was a lot of craftsmanship and care put into building it.

The Soderholms have helped us with some other large projects, as well as regular maintenance of our home. They’ve helped us renovate our garage and driveway, as well as repair damage from a washing machine leak.
